Notes on the piece

Talking in Circles is an addictively jazzy duet for flute and piano, utilizing the flute’s ability to bend pitches and play quartertones for extra attitude. Beginning with an aloof melody and brooding piano accompaniment in A minor, the piece cycles through moody episodes, leading to a flute cadenza and subsequent mood swing a whole step down into G minor. The original melody is repeated, and the piece ends with one last hair flip: a sassy flute bend.
