Notes on the Piece
Nyx in Greek mythology is the primordial goddess of the night, one of the first deities born at the dawn of creation, and often depicted as winged or driving a chariot. She is the mother of various dark spirits including the Three Fates, Strife, and Death, but also the mother of Hemera, the goddess of the day. This sonata is composed of three movements in the dark and moody key of Eb minor. Through soaring flute lines and shimmering piano accompaniment each movement conveys unique and starry imagery. The first movement is melancholy ballad, the second a moody barcarole, and the third a hypnotically rhythmic finale, ending at the very top of the flute’s register.
