Notes on the piece

Marmoris is a tone poem for solo alto flute. Through dark low register melodies, and extended techniques mimicking the sound of rushing waves, the piece describes its Latin title. Marmoris means ‘marbled’ but is often used metaphorically, for example ‘marbled waves’. With subtle color changes and lyrical melodies, this solo tells a tale of the mysteries of the ocean, and the vast unknowns beneath the waves.
