Notes on the piece
Hombres Necios (meaning Foolish Men in Spanish) is a tango full of attitude for flute, soprano, piano, and percussion. The text is an abbreviated version of the poem Hombres Necios, written by Mexican nun and “first feminist” Sor Juana Inez de la Cruz. Sor Juana was born in Mexico in the 1600s. She was praised for her prodigious intelligence and wide range of poetic repertoire. Though she was a nun, she wrote many comedic, romantic, and what we would now call feminist works, often which were secular. She was the first woman to have her work published in the New World and her image is now featured on Mexican currency.
Performed by Carole Ott Coelho, Tadeu Coelho, Dante Thomas, and Robert Rocco (2021)
